"THE FEAR OF LOSS: JEALOUSY AND ENVY"
Keywords: jealousy, envy, rivalry, comparison, competition, possession, self-esteem, self-image
research
What envy has to do with possession and achievement? What jealousy has to do with desire? From where pain, outrage and the feeling of injustice come from? What comparison and competition are responsible for? Would envy be covetous, and jealousy possessive?
If envy is common to all times and people, what types of rituals and offerings were elaborated and practiced by our tribal ancestors to defy the fear of arousing the envy of the gods? And what type of ceremonies and performative actions could we imagine today to handle our envy and jealousy? Should we fight or accept them? Why do we want to disguise them instead of affirming? Why do we feel guilty and shame?
By emphasizing the material and tangible over the spiritual and invisible, our culture of empiricism and consumerism together with Internet and social media constantly encourage us to compare ourselves to others, fanning the flames of our envy and desire.
But what if we focused on what we have instead of what we could have?
What if we learned how to enjoy the presence of having something instead of fearing the future of loosing it?
What if we focused on ourselves instead of the others?
