what is school?
First of all, a joyful space where it feels good to enter.
You open the door in the morning and feel welcomed.
A place where you don’t have to perform, to impress, to justify, where you can just be who you really are.
Where your questions matter more than your answers.
Where mistakes are part of the process. Really.
Where learning is not a race, but a slow unfolding:
you grow at your own rhythm, in your own way.
A soft space for autonomy, for agency,
and the courage to assume your choices.

what are the main differences from an art academy?
At the School of Disobedience, we don’t reproduce the academy, we offer an alternative to it:
This is not a place to become someone else.
This is a place to return to yourself — and create from there, fiercely and freely.
- Here, theory is a companion, not a pedestal. Knowledge is lived, not recited. It breathes through practice, intuition, and body-knowing.
- We value emotion, sensitivity, instinct, and imagination as much as intellect. Thinking is not only cerebral — it is tactile, somatic, relational.
- We step outside the canon — aesthetically and politically. No single lineage, no central narrative, no inherited dogma to obey.
- We do not standardize or polish identities. We refuse homogenization and honor difference — not as decoration, but as a structural principle.
- You are not trained to fit into the existing art system. You learn to see it clearly, question it, navigate it, and build beside it.
- Here, you don’t need to fit trends or chase aesthetics. Your life, your questions, your contradictions — you are your raw material.
- You don’t need to justify your choices with name-dropping or theoretical acrobatics. We don’t measure intelligence through citation.
- You don’t need to produce art that is sellable, collectable, or institutionally compliant. You follow desire — not the market.
- We don’t impose a ready-made curriculum. We begin from you, with you. The subjective is not an obstacle — it is the ground. Your story, your rhythm, your imagination lead the way.
This is not a place to become someone else.
This is a place to return to yourself — and create from there, fiercely and freely.

We’re based in Budapest, in a studio with a garden: a place to seed, cultivate, and root. Our month-long performance masterclass and 3-month somatic writing masterclass unfold here and spill sometimes into the city: streets, parks, galleries, unexpected corners. Learning stays porous, in contact with life.

Five minutes from Lake Balaton, our retreats shift the tempo. The house–garden–lake triad guides the work. We step out of urgency and performance, and return to presence, sensation, simplicity: a soft space to unlearn, to deepen, to remember yourself.

world building
We view world-building as an artistic practice.
Artists are not decorators of the present, they are visionaries of the possible, architects of alternative realities, catalysts of cultural shifts. At the School of Disobedience, you are not positioned as a follower of existing systems, but as a contributor, a thinker, a maker of methods and meanings. You are empowered to generate and share knowledge, to invent tools, to imagine frameworks for another artistic world, one that does not yet exist.
Here, we shift the ecology:
from competition to collaboration,
from passive participation to embodied responsibility,
from individual brilliance to collective intelligence.
We cultivate a culture of mutual support and radical generosity. Not the generosity of self-erasure, but the generosity of agency: we lift each other by being fully ourselves. Because we believe the future is not inherited, it is built. And in this school, you practice building it.
Not someday, now.

research
Research at the School of Disobedience is not bureaucratic, extractive, or disembodied. It is situated, emotional, embodied, and relational. We blend somatic practices, autobiographical material, collective inquiry, feminist and decolonial methodologies, and experimental pedagogies.
We investigate how art can educate, empower, and reorganize social imagination.
Here, knowledge is not consumed — it is created.
Not stored — but activated.
Not owned — but shared, tested, transformed.
We research not only what art is, but what art can do in society.
