History, Memory, Identity:
- Embodied Histories and Geographies
- Reimagining Identity and Belonging
- Performance as Embodied Ritual
about
Welcome to our multidisciplinary Masterclass program, where we invite you to embark on a transformative journey delving into the rich tapestry of history, memory, and identity through the lens of contemporary dance and performance art. Here, we view the body as more than just a vessel for movement; it becomes a dynamic landscape, a political-affective geography that reflects the complexities of our collective past and present. Within the confines of our historically shaped and colonized archive, we explore the intricate narratives woven into the fabric of our bodies and the depths of body memory. Through a series of immersive experiential exercises, critical discussions, and creative explorations, students will peel back the layers of embodied archives, revealing hidden truths and forging new pathways for multidisciplinary dance performances. Join us as we challenge conventions, ignite societal discourse, and celebrate the power of artistic expression to shape our understanding of the world around us.

your learning outcomes
- Critical Understanding: Students will develop a critical understanding of the intersection between contemporary dance and performance, gaining insights into the ways in which the body serves as a political-affective geography and a historically shaped and colonized archive.
- Creative Expression: Through a multidisciplinary approach to dance and performance, students will develop their ability to express complex ideas, emotions, and narratives through bodily movement. By honing their skills in choreography, improvisation, and somatic practices, students will cultivate a rich and nuanced vocabulary of movement, allowing them to communicate with depth and authenticity.
- Embodied Inquiry: Students will engage in critical reflection and analysis of the socio-political dimensions of contemporary dance and performance. By examining the intersections of history, memory, and identity within the context of dance, students will develop a deeper understanding of how bodies are politicized and marginalized, and explore strategies for challenging hegemonic narratives and fostering inclusivity.
- Performative Activism: By harnessing the power of the body as a political instrument, students will explore performative interventions and site-specific explorations, amplifying marginalized voices and catalyzing social change through embodied practices.
- Cultural Awareness: Through collaborative creation and experimentation, students will cultivate new narratives, crafting multidisciplinary dance performances that celebrate the richness of human diversity and invite audiences to engage with the body as a site of transformation and transcendence.
